Regenerative Medicine is a branch of medicine that involves continued research and development which focuses on replacing or repairing damaged human cells, tissue and organs to re-establish normal function.  Regenerative medicine is game-changer since it has the potential to heal any damaged tissue or organs, which in the past was considered impossible to treat and the only given remedy at that time were supportive treatments.

Use of PRP

PRP or Platelet-rich plasma is blood plasma that has a high concentration of platelets. PRP contains a lot of growth factors and special proteins like cytokines that encourage bone and soft tissue healing. Since PRP is taken from the patient’s own blood, there is no allergic reaction or rejection whatsoever.

How Is PRP Extracted and Administered

First, blood is extracted from the patient with the use of a fine needle and syringe. The amount of blood used depends on the procedure being done. Then the blood is placed in a special centrifuge to separate different blood cells: the red blood cells and while blood cells are typically found at the bottom of the test tube, the plasma at the top and the PRP is found at the middle portion. This is again placed in a syringe for administration.

Administration of PRP is pretty straightforward. It is simply injected at the affected site.

How does PRP work?

PRP utilizes the body’s own healing process. Platelets are the first to respond to tissue injury. Their main function is to plug and immediately repair any injury to prevent blood loss.  If concentrated platelets are introduced into an injured tissue like for example a torn tendon. The platelets have the ability to call out other platelets to heal and regenerate the damaged tendon. Also, as stated earlier, growth factors and cytokines help improve and speed up the healing process.

WHAT IS PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma or PRP is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets. It helps stimulate healing of bone and soft tissue.
